"You might say we started practicing sometime around 1963...our vocal trio core dated back to then...and of course we'd been getting together again, at home and a couple of gigs, starting from the fall of '86 when the reunion actually began. But no—and it even surprises me to consider it—we didn't specifically practice for the fall '87 gigs. (Classic case of "earn while you learn"? I suppose so.) Seems like somebody should've flashed, "Hey—Broadway! We'd better get together a few times and go over some stuff." But it didn't happen. DN and I did go out and buy some "hard shoes" for that hallowed stage, though, which immediately seemed absurd after we saw how relaxed Jerry was about anything like stage haberdashery. (He wore his dress coat, though.) Hoot: I was always up for winging it, but Jerry faithfully sat down and crafted a setlist for each show. Sometimes I helped. And of course we made some onstage changes when it obviously felt better to switch, add, or subtract something." (Sandy Rothman)
