| The acoustic set was Jerry, David Nelson, John Kahn and Sandy Rothman...First time played for The Ballad Of John Henry, Trouble In Mind and I'm Trouble..."It was a girl I was dating who brought me way, way northern California for this Jerry show. I was in L.A. She was living in Eugene. We both loved Jerry and the Dead. This was a no-brainer. My buddy Jeff Barth was game for the trip. The weather was going to be nice, so we left the hard top off my Jeep Wrangler and off we went. Up I-5 we made as good a time as we could in an open topped Jeep. In these days before the internet, we weren't really sure which way we should go to get out to the coast north of Sacramento. We had a map and picked a route so we could avoid Friday afternoon traffic in the Bay Area. Little did we know until we were well past the point of no return that we were going to be on a logging road for a good 50 miles on our quest to reach Highway 1. To say it was a hairy trip out to the coast would be an understatement, with 18 wheel trucks carrying tens of thousands of pounds of logs around every corner of the snaky road. We couldn't get to the 1 soon enough. Our first destination was a beautiful little town called Trinidad, an hour or so from the venue, but home to a friend of Nani's and whose place we could use for the night. A lovely lobster dinner that night lead to a very well deserved and restful snooze. We got up the next morning bright and early and got on the road to Piercy, a hamlet south of the town of Garberville, about 3 hours south of the Oregon border. We got to the venue relatively early because we wanted to get a good blanket placement and get a pre-show swim in the river. Good blanket placement this day was literally right in front of Jerry, maybe 15 feet away. Not only was it an all Jerry show, it was *three* sets, including the debut of the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band, followed by two electric sets of JGB. The poster shown says "Jerry and John Kahn for a second acoustic set", but for the record, there was no second acoustic set. It was a pretty insane show, just pure bliss on a beautiful, not too hot a day, with river dips in between sets and some of the best greenery (both the scenery and the *other* kind, wink wink, nudge nudge ;^) I've ever seen (or had). The venue and the show were just pure magic. I was the pictures could show that the stage was set up on a bend in the river with a sheer rock cliff on the west bank that naked people were jumping off into a deep eddy in the Eel. Jerry was on fire the whole show, not missing a note or dropping a single lyric the whole show." -Eric Burns | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
