We surmise that the New Riders played based 1) on the fact that they apparently opened for the Dead in East Lansing the night before and also in Milwaukee the following week, and 2) on a mention of Garcia's pedal steel playing in a contemporary show review (Mike Baron, "Woodstock Spirit Haunts ‘Dead’," Bugle American v. 2 n. 10 (#23), March 11-17, 1971, second section, p. 1).
